It’s Our 30th – and It’s Going to Be a Special One!THE first DIVER Group event at NEC Birmingham proved a bit of a surprise.
We were expecting DIVE 1991 to be popular with UK divers. Sixty exhibitors was a lot in those days. There was a dive-tank and a photo display in the hall, a separate presentation theatre featuring speakers such as Martha Holmes and Peter Scoones, and the chance to test-drive some dive RIBs outside on the NEC lake.
But within hours of the show opening on Saturday 26 October 1991 an urgent call came from Venue Security.
“We need to close the doors and hold back the visitors – it’s getting dangerously overcrowded!” So the hall doors were closed for 20 minutes until enough visitors had filtered out and the entrance could be safely re-opened.
Such was the popularity of the event that unfortunately this temporary closing/re-opening process was repeated several times in the course of the weekend. We were thankful for how understanding our visitors were, but made a mental note to book a bigger hall the following year.
So began a remarkable success story that has seen annual events featuring 200-plus exhibitors and leading the way in showcasing the work of countless top adventure divers, conservationists, underwater photographers and film-makers.
Not least among the event's innovations was the organisation of EuroTEK, which ran alongside the show in 1995 hosting tek-dive pioneers such as Billy Deans, Olivier Isler, Bret Gilliam, Lamar Hires and Rob Palmer.
The Dive Show will be marking the 25th anniversary of this milestone with a special presentation by its co-creator Mike Menduno, the man who first coined the term “Technical Diving”.
Now, with dozens of events under our belt, DIVER Group is delighted to announce our 30th anniversary NEC Dive Show – taking place on the weekend of 27/28 March 2021.
DIVE 2021 will boast the usual stages, pools and galleries. But there will also be unique attractions around the 30-year theme. Special offers, special features and special displays to mark a very special anniversary!
