Global Journalism Seminar: How fashion journalism drives industry evolution
About this Event

The fashion industry is a complex amalgamation of art, culture, and commerce, with the power to profoundly influence global societal trends, personal identities, and economic frameworks. But beneath its vibrant facade, the industry grapples with significant environmental challenges, contributing to the climate crisis through substantial resource depletion and pollution.

On June 5, Said Business School collaborates with the Reuters Institute and the Oxford Climate Journalism Network to present an evening with Sarah Kent, Chief Sustainability Correspondent at The Business of Fashion. Kent is recognised for her influential role in sustainable fashion journalism, and her reporting for Business of Fashion meticulously addresses the environmental and ethical challenges within the fashion industry. Her work is pivotal in creating a nexus between industry stakeholders, consumers, and the broader push for environmental stewardship, offering nuanced insights into sustainable practices within the fashion sector.

Business of Fashion stands as a leading global platform, renowned for its comprehensive analysis and coverage of the fashion industry's evolution towards innovation, sustainability, and strategic business practices. It seeks to bridge the gap between the dynamic realms of fashion commerce and critical industry analysis, directing the conversation towards a sustainable future.

Kent will be interviewed by the Director of Journalism Programmes at the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism, Mitali Mukherjee.

Key ideas discussed in the event include:

  • The vital role of sustainability journalism in addressing the dichotomy between the allure of the fashion industry and its significant environmental footprint.
  • How journalism can catalyse positive transformations within the fashion industry by highlighting success stories and emerging trends in sustainability – influencing both consumer behaviour and industry practices.
  • Reporting on the operational and strategic frameworks of sustainable fashion brands, and how to spot greenwashing.
