About this Event
Displaced is a monthly concert series where traditional and experimental sounds meet in spontaneity, unifying to create a space for their displaced sounds ~ a space for artists & audiences to share, feel, rage, and heal together.
Our time and profits are dedicated to supporting displaced communities from the regions within Southwest Asia and North Africa. A grassroots charity, with whom our team has direct and reliable connections to, is aided through each event.
The evening is divided into two halves. To open, Sami El-Enany collages together first hand tape recordings spanning exoskeletons, birds and mammals celebrating the gifts of rainfall in the grasslands of Senegal to the dawn chorus in Beit Jala. Tonight, Sami and Roxanna interweave their practices with a never heard until performed conversation between tape and ghaychak. The sounds of the ghaychak then continue into the evocative poetry of Prerana Kumar, featuring works by Palestinian poets and from their pamphlet, Ixora.
The second half delves into the world of HAAR, the musical project of Gisou Golshani and Winter Geamhradh. Weaving together silence, ritual, and extended vocal techniques, the result drones invite listeners to join a process of alchemising unresolved feelings into collective liberation.
This month, proceeds will be given to . This is a fund that is dedicated to the children of Gaza: providing medical attention to children who need it most, and helping to relieve the medical sector in Gaza and Lebanon. This is achieved through two main initiatives. First, critically ill children and their caretakers are transported from Palestine to Lebanon, where they can receive the best possible medical, psychological, and social care, before returning home to Palestine where they will continue their recovery. Second, the Children’s Fund provides ongoing treatment and holistic care for Lebanese children who have war injuries.
THE ARTISTS
Roxanna Albayati is an interdisciplinary artist and researcher. Her practice centres around combining experimental music with performance art and audio-visuals, where her music merges cross-cultural improvisation with Iranian Dastgāh and the physicality of performance. Through an embodied research and artistic practice, Roxanna explores the conscious/subconscious and self/other, fascinated by the process and natural evolution of discovery. @roxhsana
Sami El-Enany is an artist who works with sound, fraying the edges of modern classical, electronica and found sound. His work includes multi-channel installation, electroacoustic composition, sound design, record production and image-sound collaboration. As a musician and improvisor Sami is currently developing tape collage techniques as a tool for listening and reflection. Through his practice and research, Sami is delving into the sonics of solidarity, exploring sound as resonance for union. @samielenany
HAAR: Gisou Golshani and Winter Geamhradh; an untamed (Farsi translation) thick fog (Gaelic translation) as a reflection of, and reaction to, its environment. This drone based musical project was founded in 2024 during a time of mass genocide, creating ritual performances by embodying the grief and rage of elemental energies including water, soil and rusting metal. Conjuring shared presence with silence and improvised voice work, HAAR creates real- time invocations. Land grief and folk mythology is explored through extended vocal technique, whilst the heavy hauntology from field recordings and bass driven drone invites listeners to join a process of alchemising unresolved feelings into collective liberation. @_h_a_a_r
Prerana Kumar (they/them) is an Indian writer and editor based in London. They are currently reading for a funded doctorate in Creative Writing at QMUL. Their debut pamphlet, Ixora is out with Guillemot Press. Their work appears in Magma, The White Review, The Poetry Review, Prototype, and Wasafiri among others. They write about intergenerational inheritances, queer cosmologies, and slippery hauntings as counters to colonial and heteropatriarchal legacies. They’re always happy to share a cup of chai. @thatmoonpoet
