ABOUT OUR SPEAKERS
Professor Jane E. Kirtley is the Silha Professor of Media Ethics and Law at the Hubbard School of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Minnesota, and directs The Silha Center for the Study of Media Ethics and Law. Kirtley is also an affiliated faculty member at the University of Minnesota Law School, and has held visiting professorships at Suffolk University and Notre Dame Law schools. She was a Fulbright Scholar teaching U.S. media law and media ethics at the University of Latvia’s Law Faculty in Riga during Spring 2016. Kirtley has written friend-of-the-court briefs in the U.S. Supreme Court, as well as two books, many book chapters, and articles for scholarly journals and for the popular and professional press, including The New York Times, The Conversation, and the Guardian (UK). She will be representing the argument for uncurtailed free speech.
Professor Emeritus David Lapakko, longtime associate professor of Communication Studies at Augsburg University, taught courses in Argumentation, Persuasion, Intercultural Communication, Organizational Communication, Research Methods, and Public Speaking. He also taught a communication ethics course in Augsburg’s Master of Arts in Leadership program. David received a B.A. from Macalester College in St. Paul, and an M.A. and Ph.D. in speech-communication from the University of Minnesota. His textbook, Argumentation: Critical Thinking in Action (iUniverse, 2014) is now in its 5th edition. He was the winner of the 2015 Great American Think-Off in 2015 and honored with the title of “America’s Greatest Thinker,” winning the gold medal on the question, “Does technology free us or trap us?" He has also been a finalist in that event in 2013 and 2019. He will be representating the argument for curtailing free speech to combat disinformation.
