PANEL 3 : Mis- and disinformation in media and journalism in the Canadian context

Jonathan Montpetit: Disinformation and News Media

This panel will focus on how journalists deal with disinformation as they try to uncover factual information and create journalism that is fair and balanced. It will take an historical view, looking at how disinformation in journalism is nothing new, and that the present-day challenges journalists face should be seen on a continuum. Much of the focus of the panel will be on the contemporary challenges journalists deal with as they grapple with how disinformation is spread quickly through social media, and the influence of artificial intelligence.

Jonathan Montpetit is a Senior Investigative Journalist with CBC News, where he covers social movements and democracy. Of late, his investigations have focussed on how political extremism is traversing the US/Canada border, both with respect to how Canadian research on extremism is being used by US political groups from the hard right as well as how US-style extremist politics are making inroads into Canada, in particular as it concerns LGBQT+ rights and political representation. The fact that disinformation is a primary strategic tool of these movements and conflicts brings Mr. Montpetit directly into the conversation of this event.
