Gilded Age Gals: First Ladies from 1877-1900
This program offers an in-depth exploration of the First Ladies who served during the Gilded Age, a period marked by unprecedented economic growth, industrialization, and social stratification in the United States. From Lucy Hayes to Ida McKinley, these women occupied a unique space at the intersection of politics, social reform, and cultural expectations from 1877 to 1900. Participants will learn how these First Ladies leveraged their positions to influence national discourse on issues such as civil service reform, veterans' welfare, and public health, all while navigating the evolving role of women in society. Through critical analysis of their personal letters, public speeches, and key initiatives, this program will illuminate the complexities of their contributions and the broader impact of their leadership during one of the most transformative eras in American history.
