About this Event

What you need to know:

  • covers Data Science 1 and Data Science 2 from the new 7-10 syllabus
  • resources you can use in your classroom
  • fully catered
  • enjoy collaborative, "hands-on keyboards" learning

Details:

The SciX Discovery team at UNSW Faculty of Science is excited to offer Discovering Data- a professional development workshop for science teachers specifically designed to prepare you for teaching the Data Science content in the new 7-10 syllabus.

This workshop provides a friendly and accessible introduction to the core principles of data science for science teachers of any experience level. The approaches and resources shared by our facilitators will make it easy to engage students in authentic scientific processes using computational techniques.

Whether you plan to teach the Data Science content stand-alone or integrated across other modules, you’ll learn how to guide students in using data science tools to explore, analyse, and draw conclusions from scientific data.

Throughout the day, participants will:

  • appreciate the important and growing role of data science in scientific research and how it aligns with the NSW 7-10 Science Syllabus
  • define basic data science terms from the syllabus, and confidently demonstrate them using pre-prepared resources.
  • use provided resources to create computer models demonstrating scientific principles from across the 7-10 syllabus
  • use computational skills to perform analysis and visualisation on large data sets
  • incorporate relevant and engaging data science activities into syllabus programming based on students' capacity

This interactive and immersive session will be co-facilitated by experts in data science and experienced science educators. You’ll work with real-world data, participate in collaborative activities, and leave with a suite of resources ready to implement in your classroom.

Participants should bring their own laptops and require access to the free platform Google Colaboratory. Please let us know if you need a laptop provided for you.

This workshop includes 5 hours of PD related to APST descriptors:
2.1.2 Apply knowledge of the content and teaching strategies of the teaching area to develop engaging teaching activities.
2.6.2 Use effective teaching strategies to integrate ICT into learning and teaching programs to make selected content relevant and meaningful.
3.3.2 Select and use relevant teaching strategies to develop knowledge, skills, problem-solving, and critical and creative thinking.

Spaces are limited to ensure a supportive, small-group learning environment. Don’t miss this opportunity to stay ahead of the curve and prepare to engage your students with these new approaches.
