The graceful granite archways of historic Fort Warren will greet you as you arrive for your visit to Georges Island. This Civil War-era fort is the main attraction of Georges Island and it is sure to bring out your inner history enthusiast. The construction of Fort Warren, built to protect Boston, began in 1833 and took nearly two decades to complete. Nearly obsolete upon completion, the island was used as a training facility for Union soldiers during the Civil War. During your next trip to Georges Island, enjoy a picnic, explore with a ranger-guided tour, or stop by the visitor center to delve into history — and be sure to ask about the legend of the Lady in Black!
[OPTIONAL and included in your ticket] Meet Dr. Charles Macgill, a confederate political prisoner during the Civil War. Join the spirit of Dr. Charles Macgill of Hagerstown, Maryland, in a stroll through Fort Warren as he reminisces about his confinement here as a political prisoner during the Civil War. Hour-long tours depart from the Visitor Center at 11:15am and 1:15 pm.
[IMPORTANT] All visitors must bring a face covering in order to travel to the park via public ferry. Face coverings are required while boarding the ferry and traveling aboard park ferries in indoor seating areas. If you or anyone in your party feels unwell, or has been exposed to COVID-19, please visit us at another time.
