Don Childrey is the author of the "Uwharrie Lakes Region Trail Guide", the best resource for Uwharrie hikers and bikers!
On Friday, February 7th, 2025, guidebook author Don Childrey will lead a 6-mile hike from the Woodrun Trailhead on NC 24/27. The hike will start at noon, hopefully letting the day warm up a little first. This intermediate-level hike will be a variation of Wood Run Hike Trip A (page 484 in the guidebook), with a couple extra miles and some bushwhacking thrown in. The off-trail section will allow us to connect to other trails, creating a unique route.Along the way, we'll visit a couple of the "Lost Uwharrie" locations to be featured in an upcoming book. These "lost" locations are little-known spots of interest that have fallen out of common knowledge and nearly been lost to the passage of time. Sound mysterious? Curious to know more? Part of this hike is a literal walk through the past. The Woodrun Trail goes right through the historic location of "Lawrenceville", the old County Seat and former location of the Courthouse for Montgomery County, NC. The well that serviced the court house is pictured above.
