When a man calling himself "the Scorpio Killer" menaces San Francisco, tough-as-nails Police Inspector "Dirty" Harry Callahan is assigned to track down the crazed psychopath.Highly controversial when it came out, seen by some as a fantasy straight from the brain of some right-wing nut, with it glorifying the main character's use of police brutality and disregard for the Bill of Rights. At the 44th Academy Awards protesters held up banners that displayed messages such as "Dirty Harry is a Rotten Pig."
Director Don Siegel denied that he set out to make a political movie, that it's simply a cop-and-killer story meant as entertainment, and with a cop that's just as evil as the killer in some ways.
Either way, it's a superbly well made action-thriller now regarded as a classic in the genre, spawning countless imitators with the whole cop chasing serial killer thing. Clint Eastwood does the kind of hard ass he does better than anyone else, and Andrew Robinson were so good as the sadistic psycho-killer in this that he kind of ruined his chances of having a varied career, instead getting typecast as sadistic psycho-killers ever after.
