Milwaukee – The League of Women Voters of Milwaukee County is hosting a public forum titled, “Dire Consequences: Impact of Abortion Restrictions / A Focus on Wisconsin” on Wednesday, October 2, at 6:30 p.m. The forum can be attended online or in-person at Nō Studios. The event is free and open to the public, but registration is REQUIRED. See the link in the bio to RSVP.Extreme abortion restrictions are in place in some states, where they have imperiled women's lives and future fertility and have had devastating consequences for families. LWVMC Reproductive Rights Committee presents a Public Issues Forum to learn more about this critical issue from medical and legal experts.
"Many individuals are unaware that the US maternal mortality rate has been rapidly increasing since 2019," said Dr. Charlene Gaebler-Uhing MD, MHPE Adolescent Medicine Physician and co-chair of the League's Reproductive Rights Committee. "The US rate is 5-6 times higher than other developed countries, and American black women are three times more likely to die than white women during pregnancy and immediate post-partum period. At this public forum, we will discuss why we have such high rates, why black women are disproportionately impacted and what can be done to reverse these trends."
