Speaker: John Brown, Lake View High School (Chicago)Title: Artisanal Math
Abstract: Artisanal Mathematics, the mathematics of the craftsperson and the workshop, is underrepresented in school mathematics. Commercial-administrative and philosophical mathematics dominate the mainstream curriculum. We will investigate the theoretical and historical background of our current curriculum and be encouraged to collect examples of artisanal mathematics and translate them into curricular materials. Math examples include alternative methods for geometric constructions and measurement
