Talk title: The next generation of the internet: IPv6 and the Security benefits it provides to us all

The internet is now a fundamental aspect of life, but the way we connect and interact with the internet is changing.

IPv6 represents the next generation of the internet – a change that will have a real impact on all of us and everything we do. IPv6 is designed to support the ever-growing digital domain and all the use cases within it for at least the next century. So, it is important that we ensure IPv6 is implemented in both a secure and scalable way.

Although IPv6 has been around since the late 1990’s, it is in the past couple of years that IPv6 adoption has rapidly grown. IPv6 now forms nearly 50% of the internet traffic in the UK and its adoption is now mandated in over 40 countries around the world including the US, China and Germany.

This seminar will discuss the critical issues that IPv6 solves, the security benefits it provides and the potential risks it inadvertently creates – such as end to end connectivity, publicly available devices and unmonitored surface areas. Come along to understand how we will all use IPv6 to connect and interact on the internet and what impact IPv6 will have for all of us from a security point of view.

Biography: David Kennedy’s background is in Threat Intelligence, where he focuses on proactively identifying issues in networks before they can be targeted and exploited by attackers. He has collaborated with organizations of various sizes and across multiple sectors worldwide to develop both on-prem and cloud-based security strategies. Additionally, David has created one of the few comprehensive internet-wide IPv6 measurement tools.
