About this Event

A Beginner's Guide to 2D Animation

Class meets daily from Monday, July 8 to Friday, July 12 (9 AM to 3 PM)

Class Description: 2D animation is making a resurgence, and this class is designed for young people who want to begin exploring the skills required to create their own work. This class will teach students to create a basic 2D, hand-drawn, frame-by-frame animation. The class covers the 12 principles of animation, the basics of motion, and other important animation terminology. These principles have been taught since the 1930s and are still the basis for all animations. Students who complete the class will have a foundation for exploring 2D animation further.

Age Range: 12-18

Useful Prior Experience:

  • A basic understanding of drawing
  • An interest in storytelling
  • The ability to follow along with the instructor

Technical Requirements: Computers will be available in the computer lab at Create Appalachia. Digital drawing tablets will be supplied by Create Appalachia for use while students are in the lab. The class will be taught using free digital software called Krita. Depending on the type of computer that a student has at home, they may be able to download and use this software at home and after completing the class.

Students are required to bring a thumb drive from home so that they can download their work and preserve it. We recommend a 10GB thumb drive.

Course Goals:

  • To help students understand the basics of animation and the aesthetics of a smooth animation
  • To learn to create a personal animation while applying all 12 principles
  • To create a clean animation that demonstrates an understanding of the ideas covered during class

Course Description:

This class will take place over a period of five days. Each class will include both lecture and individual work time. The instructor will begin each session by introducing new concepts related to 2D animation, which students will incorporate in that day's work. Each class will also have workshop time during which students can work on their characters and seek one-on-one help from the instructor. Classes will run from 9 AM to 3 PM with short breaks in the morning and afternoon and a break for lunch around noon.

Day 1: Introductions. Several important principles of animation, including squash-and-stretch and anticipation, among others.

Day 2: More principles, including straight-ahead animating, pose-to-pose, and follow through. Students will then have time to start on their own personal five-second animation.

Day 3: Additional principles, including arc, timing, and exaggeration.

Day 4: Solid drawing and appeal

Day 5: Time for students to finish their personal, five-second animation before saving it as a video. After a break there will be more work time for finalizing details before the students display their work in the showcase.

NOTE: Our Character Creation class is the perfect set-up for this class! It will run from JJune 24-28 , also in Kingsport. We encourage you to register for both!
