Poetry has long been known as a gateway to the soul, and writing for yourself can unlock this mysterious gateway. As both theraputic practice and creative outlet the power of poetry is unmathed. Where fiction may shroud the writers' self in idealistic characters, poetry is a more direct window upon the inner workings of the mind that we all aspire to learn from and grow into.
With generative prompts and literary examples this workshop will delve deep into the poetntial for using poetry as therapy and for seeing theraputic work as fertile soil for growing literary explorations of the self.
Katherine McDaniel is the founder and editor of the literary and visual arts magazine and arts incubator Synkroniciti. She is a classically trained opera singer and a twenty-year veteran of the acclaimed Houston Grand Opera Chorus. In 2012, Katherine had three poems commissioned by Houston Grand Opera for Houston Artists Respond, part of the Home and Place Initiative. Nubia’s Shoes, Yo soy un Corazòn and Drumming were inspired by videos of senior adults at Baker Ripley Community Center in Houston. The poems tell the stories of Latin American women who immigrated to the United States. She has been published in Gleam: Journal of the Cadralor and often reads her poetry at Archway Gallery’s monthly readings.
