Class Description:

There’s something immensely gratifying about going to the garden and picking fresh vegetables for your dinner table. Springtime is one of two growing seasons in Phoenix and you have many choices of what to grow. Even as temperatures rise in late spring (and early summer), there are lots of heat-loving vegetables you can successfully grow and enjoy. Plant what you love to eat! Start small, take notes and get growing!

Participants will learn:

• Vegetables need sunlight, healthy soil, and proper hydration to grow. Learn how to manage the climate and microclimates, prepare the soil, use of fertilizers and water your garden.
  
• Decide where you will grow your vegetables and how this affects care and harvesting.
  
• Know when to sow seeds versus transplants, chose short season varieties, and know when to harvest; learn how to use planting calendars to extend your vegetable production.
  
• Discover vegetables that love the heat and extend your growing season into monsoon months.
  
• Keep a garden notebook.
  

Presented by Master Gardener Karen Kumar

Karen has been a Master Gardener since 2020 but she has been growing vegetables for 30 years. She has experience with vegetable gardening on the Gulf Coast, the Midwest and New England. Karen has been growing vegetables in Phoenix since 2006 and admits that growing food in the desert has been the most challenging and gratifying. Her favorite spring vegetables are tomatoes, peppers of all kinds, squash, eggplant, okra and black-eyed peas.
