Explore ideas to help create your own oasis in smaller spaces whether a small yard, courtyard, balcony, or patio.
About this Event

With small garden spaces, it’s best to think about “outdoor rooms” and, much like interior design, first think about the way you want to use and enjoy the space. Consider how elements of color, hardscape, furniture, shade, sun, water, fire and light fit and interact with the plants we choose. Knowing the right plant for the right place is essential to creating the ideal space to bring more success and enjoyment to how you live outside.

Learning Objectives

  • Learn about unique characteristics of the Sonoran Desert environment and how they affect our design and planting choices.
  • Learn how to see your space as an "outdoor room" to design and decorate much like you would with interior design.
  • Explore ideas using colors, textures, sun exposure and a combination of hard and soft elements to create beautiful outdoor spaces.
  • Discover some of the best desert plants to help create the kind of beauty and style you envision in your outdoors.

Speakers: Katie Coates

Katie has lived in Arizona, California and Colorado and loves the West, Southwest, and Rocky Mountain regions. After moving to Arizona 15 years ago, Katie blended her skills in Rocky Mountain gardening with desert landscaping. She became a Certified Desert Landscape Designer through Desert Botanical Gardens and a University of Arizona Maricopa County Certified Master Gardener. She also enjoys writing about seasonal blooming plants periodically in Phoenix Home & Garden magazine (recent feature in “Masters of the Southwest” edition, Feb/March 2021 Bio - Katie Coates, Certified Desert Landscape Designer & Master).
