About this Event

THIS CLASS IS IN-PERSON AT THE COOPERATIVE EXTENSION OFFICE LIMITED SEATING AVAILABLE SO EARLY REGISTRATION IS RECOMMENDED

Gardening in the desert seems very hard to most people but this class will show you simple ways to set up and care for your raised bed gardens.

Learning Objectives:

  • Pros and Cons when selecting your raised bed site
  • How large should a raised bed be? (Including how deep, how wide and different types of raised bed materials.)
  • How do I prepare or refresh my raised bed for fall planting?
  • What do I grow, when to plant, seeds vs transplants.
  • How to maintain the raised bed garden: compost vs mulch, fertilizers, insects, temperatures
  • Watering: Hot to conserve it but still get a good yield.

Speaker: Master Gardener Amber Hughes

Amber has loved nature since she was a little kid and had always been fascinated by animals. She wanted to be a biologist but her love of plants started in high school when she took a botany class because to avoid dissecting a frog.

She completed her BS in biology and her MS in plant biology from ASU. She’s not only a Master Gardener but also SmartScape trained. Amber worked at a high-end plant nursery for several years and is currently working on a Watershed Management certificate for her current position as a Water Conservation Coordinator. Amber started gardening with her mother and grandmother when at about 3-4 years old and has been an avid gardener since. Amber taught biology, plant biology and environmental science at all levels including University level, for 25 years before moving into water conservation.
