About this Event
About the Event
My presentation will delve into (i) diffuse reflectance spectroscopy and (ii) its applications in soil science. First, I will briefly outline the fundamental concepts, describe the soil information that spectra hold and why we need to develop spectral libraries. I will dispel some of the current misunderstanding around soil spectroscopic modelling and describe our cutting-edge research on model localisation. Second, I will show some applications of soil spectroscopy in digital soil mapping and in soil carbon modelling with Roth-C for predictions of C change. If time allows, I will briefly show (for the first time) our software tool that uses a global soil spectral library and implements our latest localisation methods to enable soil spectroscopic modelling and estimation anywhere in the world.
About the Speaker
Raphael is a soil scientist whos’ work helps to better understand and predict how soil functions respond to climate and anthropogenic change. He’s particularly interested in carbon sequestration, the preservation of biodiversity, nutrient cycling and food production. He develops new methods for measuring, mapping and monitoring soil; and uses empirical, machine learning and mechanistic models for prediction at relevant spatial and temporal scales. He is a Clarivate Analytics highly cited researcher, has received numerous awards and has supervised and co-supervised many undergraduate and postgraduate students. Currently, he holds a Professorial position at Curtin University in Soil and Landscape Science.
