Duende, as articulated by the Spanish poet Federico García Lorca, is that mystical force that infuses art with deep emotion and authenticity, bringing a profound, almost magical quality to the evening.

Saudade, on the other hand, is a Portuguese word that conveys a deep, bittersweet longing for something or someone absent, reflecting both joy and sorrow.

In the realm of vampires, it takes on a much more dark and deeper meaning, representing not just romantic longing, but also the acceptance of solitude and the profound agony of a broken heart. It’s a celebration of those who embrace their own company, who find strength in their independence, and who understand the bittersweet nature and profound beauty of love and loss.

DJ NOCTURNA is a veteran events promoter, club DJ, and radio broadcaster with over two decades of experience shaping the dark alternative scene. She currently hosts the Queen of Wands radio show on Modsnap Radio and was formerly the voice behind A Feast of Friends on KTUH 90.1 FM. As the founder of DIES IN THE NIGHT, she continues to explore the mystical intersection of music, astrology, and financial market cycles through her YouTube channel and podcast, CHARTING THE HIGHER OCTAVE.

A true curator of dark art and culture, DJ Nocturna launched DARK ALOHA, early this year, a Honolulu-based zine dedicated to the darker arts, music, and the cultural scenes. DJ Nocturna is one of the promoters and DJs behind the wildly successful dance event/ 80s night, ACID WASH, which has captivated audiences for nearly 20 years.

IG Dies In The Light

DJ DAT-MOT has been a staple of the dark music scene since the late ’80s, known for his DJ sets blending goth, industrial, and dark ’80s. A pioneer of Honolulu’s underground nightlife, he was the founder of NOCTUARY, a long-running dark alternative event held for several years at the legendary Pink Cadillac in Waikīkī. His influence continues today as a resident DJ at DIES IN THE LIGHT, where he spins monthly to a devoted crowd. Since the pandemic, he’s also kept the dark spirit alive online through his ongoing virtual project, CRYPTIC.

DJ NIGHT FOX is one of the resident DJs at DIES IN THE LIGHT, known for her immersive sets that span goth, industrial, EBM, synthpop, and dark alternative. A graduate of the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa with a degree in journalism, she was a founding member of Nonstop Honolulu, the trailblazing predecessor to Frolic Hawai‘i. As a recognized, prominent nightlife photographer, she also works as a freelance journalist, photographer, copy editor, and communications manager for an art gallery, bringing a sharp editorial eye and creative spirit to every project she touches.
