In the summer of 1994 the music world was collectively holding its breath for the next Smashing Pumpkins record. The Pumpkins had had an unexpectedly successful independent release: Gish in 1991 with Butch Vig at the helm as producer. Butch followed up with the smash hit record: Nirvana Nevermind. Add to that the ascendance of “alternative music,” and the pressure on Billy Corgan to write a hit record couldn’t have been higher.
The result is a collection of songs that made an indelible mark on the culture. 4 months behind schedule and $250,000 over budget it debuted at number 10 and went on to sell 6 million copies.
