Diamond Crusade: Black Baseball in Lafayette

In 1888, Bud Fowler, the earliest known African American to play baseball, was turned away from playing in Lafayette due to his skin color. In 1945, Jackie Robinson, the first player to integrate the major leagues, played in an exhibition game against the Lafayette Red Sox at Loeb Stadium. Between those years, Tippecanoe County witnessed its first black baseball player, its own black teams, and games against Negro League teams. This program will use Fowler and Robinson as bookends to showcase a forgotten era in Tippecanoe County's history and demonstrate the significance of black baseball teams in breaking racial barriers.
Presented by Matt Meyer, Tippecanoe County Public Library Reference Librarian. Sponsored by The National Group.
This program will be available via Zoom. Check back later for the link!
