At the apex of a power journey, don Miguel Ruiz tells his eldest son: “Find your way out. Go home and master Death by becoming alive.”
Don Miguel Ruiz, Jr. and don Jose Ruiz return to New Renaissance Bookstore for the first time in five years on Saturday, November 1st — Día de Todos los Santos, the opening of the Day of the Dead celebrations in Mexico. It is the day we honor those who have passed, yet continue to live within our hearts and memories, reminding us to cherish ourselves, our loved ones, and to take nothing in life for granted. The Ruiz Brothers’ last gathering at New Renaissance came just before the world closed its doors in 2020 a living example of this lesson that life can change in an instant. From this truth we learn: to meet each opportunity with our whole selves, to be fully present, and to treasure every moment as a gift. This is true in relationships as it is in life. That is the essence of what our elders have taught us regarding this celebration; respecting Death allows us to let go of the fear we have of Life. Thus, to us the Day of the Dead is a celebration of love, for we could not mourn if we did not love those who have gone before us.
“When we lose the fear of saying goodbye, we lose the fear of saying hello.”
-don Miguel Ruiz Jr.
At this event, each brother will share from their newest books, guiding readers to release old dreams and step into new ones through the wisdom of the their family’s Toltec tradition: My Good Friend the Rattlesnake by don Jose Ruiz, and The Poisoned Arrow: A Toltec Guide to Overcoming Fear by don Miguel Ruiz Jr.
