Día de los Muertos" and "Red Tent" are two distinct concepts that, while seemingly unrelated, can be brought together in thoughtful and meaningful ways.
Bringing them together
While the Red Tent traditionally focuses on women's cycles and community, its core principles of honoring and connection can resonate with the spirit of Día de los Muertos.
Honoring Ancestral Women: A Día de los Muertos Red Tent gathering could be a special space for women to specifically honor their female ancestors – mothers, grandmothers, and other important women in their lineage – and share their stories.
Creating a Women-Focused Ofrenda: Within a Red Tent setting, a dedicated ofrenda could be created, adorned with elements that particularly honor the feminine, perhaps with red flowers representing blood and life, and images or symbols relating to important women in history or one's personal life.
Womb Wisdom & Ancestral Connection: The Red Tent tradition also emphasizes the passing down of "Blood Mysteries," teaching about the power of the womb and its connection to the Earth and moon cycles. This could be woven into the Día de los Muertos observance by reflecting on the generations of women who came before, their strength, and the wisdom they impart, even after their passing.
This gathering’s is focused on honoring female ancestors and their stories within the supportive space of a Red Tent:
We will be creating an Altar for our female ancestors.
Bring photos or mementos of their mothers, grandmothers, sisters, or other important female figures. Celebrating their lives and creating a welcoming space for their spirits to visit.
We will be sharing ancestral stories and memories: Sharing stories, anecdotes, and lessons learned from their female ancestors.
We will have a ritual for honoring and remembering:
Lighting candles and offering prayers or intentions: A simple yet powerful ritual to connect with the ancestors.
We will then follow with Music and dancing:
to celebrate life.
