Understanding and Addressing Eating Disorders in the Workplace
Objectives
1. Define Eating Disorders:
- Provide a clear understanding of
various eating disorders, including anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa,
avoidant-restrictive food intake disorder, and binge-eating disorder.
- Discuss the prevalence and impact of
these disorders on individuals.
2. Identify Signs and Symptoms:
- Educate attendees on the common signs
and symptoms of eating disorders.
- Highlight behavioral, physical, and
emotional indicators to look for in employees and loved ones.
3. Promote a Supportive Workplace Environment:
- Offer strategies for creating a
workplace culture that supports mental health and wellness.
- Discuss the importance of reducing
stigma and encouraging open conversations about eating disorders.
- Guide on how to approach and support
a colleague who may be struggling with an eating disorder.
- Provide tips and tools for maintaining a healthy
work-life balance and promoting personal well-being.
4. Implement Policies and Practices:
- Suggest policies and best practices
for supporting employees with eating disorders.
- Discuss the role of HR and management
in creating an inclusive and supportive environment.
Dr. Kaitlyn Milstead is a licensed marriage and family therapist based in Allen, TX. She has a passion for working collaboratively with clients as they break free from narratives that no longer serve them and begin to re-author their own stories.
Dr. Milstead earned her doctorate in Couple, Marriage, and Family Therapy at Texas Tech University, where she also completed her master of science in Marriage and Family Therapy and her bachelor of science in Community, Family, and Addiction Services. She has worked in the field of eating disorder treatment at the residential, PHP, IOP, and outpatient levels of care throughout her career. Additionally, Dr. Milstead instructed the course, Treatment of Eating Disorders, at Texas Tech University, and has authored numerous peer-reviewed academic publications. Dr. Milstead's areas of concentration have been in treating eating disorders, self-injurious behaviors, mood disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and other co-occurring issues in both adolescents and adults. Additionally, she offers parent support, parent coaching, and relational counseling.
Currently, Dr. Milstead owns and operates her private practice, New Narratives Counseling. Through her practices, she serves the community on an individual and relational level. Her collaborative approach allows clients and families to develop confidence and autonomy in their healing journey, while also providing a secure sense of support.
Passion and commitment have served as the driving forces for Dr. Milstead's work. She has spent her career treating each individual with patient-centered, compassionate, and individualized care. Her goal is to continue joining as they navigate recovery and reclaim their story.
McKenzie Harris is a Registered Dietitian and Certified Eating Disorder Specialist in Allen, TX. With a deep-rooted passion for nutrition and physical activity, she brings a unique perspective to her work, driven by personal experience and extensive professional training.
McKenzie earned her Bachelor of Science in Nutritional Sciences and Dietetics from Texas A&M University, where she also completed her dietetic internship. Her clinical dietetic internship further honed her skills and introduced her to the world of nutrition education, sports nutrition, and eating disorder treatment.
Since starting her career, she has worked predominantly in the behavioral health nutrition space and has seen patients at various levels of eating disorder care, providing nutrition education and guidance to clients and their families.
Over the last three years, McKenzie has worked in the outreach and business development space for mental health treatment centers, while continuing to operate her private practice, Nurtured Nutrition Therapy, offering support and guidance to individuals seeking to improve their relationship with food, movement, and their bodies. Her current career endeavor has her working as a Patient Care Advocate for Beacon Behavioral Partners - where she leads both internal and external marketing initiatives for their specialty treatment offerings company-wide.
McKenzie's approach to dietary counseling and education is an eclectic combination of evidence-based medical nutrition therapy and therapeutic modalities. Her journey through athletics and recovery from an eating disorder, coupled with her experiences at higher levels of acute and outpatient care, equip her with a distinctive and empathetic perspective for her work with clients.
McKenzie is resolute in her commitment to infuse every facet of her work with joy and empathy, living by the guiding mantra, "Feeding Joy, Fueling Motion."
