Detroit Sound Conservancy April 10th, 2025- 7:00 PM
Thursday Night Jazz Series at The Hawk Blackbox
This event takes place at the Hawk Community Center located at 29995 W 12 Mile Road, Farmington Hills, MI 48334
Detroit Sound Conservancy (DSC) is a community-based archive dedicated to preserving, activating, and celebrating Detroit's musical heritage. In partnership with Farmington Hills Hawk, DSC has curated a series of performances to further this mission through honoring, sustaining, and nurturing musical talent. Acting as a creative conduit, DSC connects community audiences to local talent, allowing them to experience musical ingenuity live, on the bandstand, in the club, and intergenerationally—the Detroit way.
DSC is currently rehabilitating the Blue Bird Inn, a historic neighborhood jazz club on Tireman Avenue, in Detroit’s West side. The Blue Bird Inn, which featured performances from John
Coltrane and Miles Davis, and with house bands led by Thad Jones, Tommy Flanagan, Yusef Lateef, and Donald Byrd, is a natural home for Detroit music history.
Ian Fink is a Detroit musician who has worked alongside DSC in illuminating the inventiveness of Detroit jazz and its intimate relationship to other styles from funk to techno.
"Ian Finkelstein (AKA Ian Fink) is a pianist, producer, composer, and educator. A student of Detroit jazz luminaries such as Marcus Belgrave, Geri Allen, and Rodney Whitaker, he has been
performing professionally since the age of 14 when he was a member of Detroit’s Civic Jazz Orchestra. He has since performed with artists such as Benny Golson, Marcus Belgrave, Esperanza Spalding, Terri Lyne Carrington, Kassa Overall, Common, Earl Sweatshirt, and Karriem Riggins. He is equally active in the city’s house and techno community, and releases his own solo work on Freak Press, a label he founded in 2017. His body of work reflects a restlessness of genre: projects include solo jazz piano, house, techno, ambient music, and beyond. Ian is a 2024 Kresge Artist Fellow, as well as a recipient of a Spirit of Detroit Award
from the City of Detroit in 2024."
Detroit Sound Conservancy is honored to present this vital Detroit performer and artist. Ian Fink’s work not only enriches Detroit’s music landscape, but inspires future generations to continue the legacy of creativity that Detroit is known for.
Beer and wine will be available for patrons 21 years and above.
