L'oratorio brûlant de Walton, Belshazzar's Feast, composé pour baryton, chœur et orchestre, est basé sur l’incroyable histoire du roi babylonien Belshazzar, dans laquelle se trouve la fameuse scène du festin, où une main apparaît et écrit prophétiquement un message divin sur le mur. Souvent comparé à Carmina Burana de Carl Orff en raison de sa vigueur rythmique et de sa splendeur barbare, Belshazzar's Feast est aujourd’hui considéré comme l’une des meilleures œuvres chorales britanniques de grande envergure depuis The Dream of Gerontius d'Elgar.
À l’œuvre grandiose de William Walton on oppose ce soir la cantate intime et nostalgique d’Edward Elgar, autre compositeur éminent de la Grande-Bretagne, The Music Makers où l’on peut entendre plusieurs citations de ses propres œuvres. Originellement composée pour soprano ou ténor, mais proposée ici par une contralto, la pièce reprend le texte d’Arthur O'Shaughnessy, Music and Moonlight (1874), inspiré par l’idée que les artistes sont les vrais créateurs et artisans de l’Histoire et de la société.

Walton's searing oratorio Belshazzar's Feast, composed for baritone, chorus and orchestra, takes as its story the scene from the Bible in which, at a feast for King Belshazzar, a hand appears and prophetically writes a divine message on the wall. Often compared to Orff's Carmina Burana for its driving pulse and barbaric splendor, Belshazzar's Feast is now considered the best large-scale British choral work since Elgar's The Dream of Gerontius.
Coupled with William Walton's grandiose work is the intimate, nostalgic cantata by Edward Elgar, another of Britain's leading composers, in which we hear several quotations from his own works. Originally written for soprano or tenor, orchestra and chorus, but which you will hear with contralto, The Music Makers is inspired by the idea that artists are the true creators and artisans of history and society.
