About this Event
60th Anniversary Screening! A ridiculous old-school sex comedy that must be seen to be believed!
Movie stars Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward made sixteen movies together. This silly sex comedy is one of them—the starchy, retro rom-com combines fashion, sexism, and mistaken identity. The couple play a cynical sports writer and uptight fast-fashion copyist who fall in hate-at-first sight while on assignment in Paris, where Woodward gets an elaborate haute couture makeover. Even with support from Thelma Ritter, Eva Gabor, and Maurice Chevalier, an incredible wardrobe by costume designer Edith Head (winner of a record eight Academy Awards) and her then-assistant Bob Mackie, and acclaimed fashion photographer Hoyningen-Huene acting as colour consultant, A New Kind of Love is preposterous from start to finish. Maybe that’s why Newman and Woodward clearly had a ball making this movie! - NATHALIE ATKINSON
