What will we experience in this workshop?
In this workshop, Julian Montague will share some of his methods for developing personal projects that lead to growth as a designer and creative thinker. Students will create graphics and then invent titles, events, or fictional names that work with the composition. Although creating a brief based on a graphic rarely happens in professional life, the process of working backward creates space to generate new visual and conceptual ideas and creatively explore the interaction between text and image.
Workshop program details
Participants will work on a graphic using collections of randomly assigned paper shapes. They will photograph each iteration of the compositions they make with the shapes. From there, students will select one of their compositions and, working backward, will invent a fictional event or title that works with the graphic. The text can be simply applied in the smartphone photo app (the emphasis here is not on typography). This leads to the creation of a draft for a poster, album cover, or book cover. Other exercises will follow as students divide into groups to provide feedback on each other’s work and then begin working with new stimuli generated from the first round of creation. The focus is on creating compositions with limited elements and playing with the interactions between words and images.
What do you need to bring?
You will only need to bring your smartphone; you can also bring a tablet or laptop.
Who is it for?
The workshop is aimed at artists and designers interested in finding new ways to generate ideas through self-initiated practices.
