About this Event
This a a great single day introductory class to the art of stained glass!
Bring your own design ideas to this stained glass suncatcher class! Learn how to design your own suncatcher template, cut glass, apply copper foil, and solder together.
Either design your suncatcher ahead of time or choose from our binder of beginner patterns. The best beginner designs consist of simple shapes and stay around a dozen pieces. Think contour line drawings, like a coloring page. The maximum size for our suncatchers for this class will be 8.5x5.5" (half a sheet of printer paper) but we can adjust to be more symmetrical, like a 6.5x6.5" square or circle. You can also come with your design pre-drawn in pencil so that adjustments may be made, or print it out. We will need two copies, one will stay intact and one will be cut apart. A printer/photocopier is available at the studio.
Once our designs are chosen, we will select our glass, cut it, refine it on the grinder machines, and then we will apply copper foil and solder together to create our suncatchers! A design that has around a dozen pieces maximum is ideal for this short class so that we can finish in time, but in the event you need more time, you are always welcome back to Open Studio hours to finish your project at no further charge.
All tools and materials provided. You may wish to add specific beads or other findings to your design. I do have some things on hand, but feel free to bring your own. Seashells, small glass pieces, chain, or old jewelry are all great options.
We will be working with sharp glass, hot tools, and chemicals. Safety glasses and nitrile gloves are provided.
