Design Principles Parents, Families and Community In-Person Focus Group

Pittsburgh Public Schools wants your input on Design Principles that will help us as a community frame what matters and guide our decision-making as we strive to be one of America’s premier school districts, student-focused, well-managed, and innovative.

 In collaboration and approval with the Board of Directors, Superintendent Wayne N. Walters has identified five priority goals to inform a strategic planning process that will ultimately result in a five-year strategic plan.

Goal 1: Invest in culturally responsive, evidence-based training, tools, and instructional practices.

Goal 2: Construct safety, health, and wellness protocols.

Goal 3: Expand stakeholder communication and partnerships.

Goal 4: Design effective organizational systems; and

Goal 5: Strategically allocate resources to ensure equity, excellence, and efficiency.

Finding Agreement Through the Use of Design Principles

The use of Design Principles can serve as a powerful tool to help us reach Goal 5. Design principles are value statements that can help us as a community frame what matters and inform the tough decisions the Pittsburgh Public Schools must make related to the strategic allocation of our resources to ensure equity, excellence and efficiency.

The Superintendent's Leadership Team has drafted value statements in four areas to frame potential decisions based on best-practices.

• Academics
• Programs and Services
• People and Staff, and
• Structural and Financial

The Superintendent shared the draft design principles with the Board of Directors for their input and feedback and now would like the feedback of the entire Pittsburgh Public Schools community.
