About Watex G. Phelps Sr.:
Phelps Sr. was part of the second cohort of African American students to be bused in Evansville; he was also in the first cohort of the alternative schools program.
He will reflect on his personal experience and that of his classmates, as well as provide a historical analysis of the effectiveness of busing. He will use Dr. Alfred Wiley’s 1962 seminal doctoral dissertation on segregation within the Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation as a point of departure.

Timothy Egan’s "A Fever in The Heartland" is a New York Times bestseller and a top-circulating title at EVPL in 2024. The book details the Klan’s rise in Indiana (with multiple mentions of Evansville) and the courageous woman who helped bring about its downfall.
