About this Event
Desbande Quintet — Tango Nuevo in Concert
Formed in 2023 under the artistic direction of violinist Phoebe Snelling, the group draws profound inspiration from Astor Piazzolla’s legendary Nuevo Quintet, exploring the rhythmic vitality, emotional intimacy, and daring innovation that transformed Tango forever.
With their distinctive instrumentation — bandoneon, violin, guitar, piano, and double bass — Desbande Quintet honours Piazzolla’s original sound world while bringing fresh nuance, spontaneity, and modern sensitivity to the concert stage. Their debut studio recording of Piazzolla’s Michelangelo 70 in 2023 marked them as an ensemble of exceptional precision and sincerity. Since then, they have performed to captivated audiences, including a celebrated debut at Milton Court Concert Hall, and most recently appearing alongside the Philharmonia Orchestra and Argentine Tango Champions Adrien Bariki-Alaoui and Iro Davlanti-Lo for Marin Alsop conducts Bernstein and Piazzolla at the Royal Festival Hall, London.
This concert offers a rare chance to experience the full dramatic breadth of Tango Nuevo — at once smouldering, virtuosic, and deeply human.
