How to buy Tickets?
To buy tickets, first note that there are three sessions, each on a different date, covering different topics. If you want to attend just one session, select the date of that session and purchase either a member or non-member ticket. If you want to attend multiple sessions, select the dates for all the sessions you wish to attend, and then purchase either a member or non-member ticket for each date.
Session 1: Foundations of Observational Drawing - Friday 19th of July
1. Introduction: Artists talk PowerPoint presentation (Approxmiately 20 minutes)
2. Overview of drawing materials and their applications, demonstration and discussion with presentation of varied artist’s work showing examples of materials/mediums used. (Approximately 60 minutes)
3. Class exercise: blind and sighted Contour Drawing – a line drawing method to hone and understand observational practice (Approximately 20 minutes)
4. Refreshment Break (Approximately 20 minutes)
5. Class exercise: warm-up contour drawing from still life (Approximately 10 minutes)
6. Class exercise: Construction drawing from still life – covering drawing elements such as
composition, perspective and gridding methods to execute and prepare a line drawing to
add medium and tone. (Approximately 50 minutes)
7. Class exercise: Chiaroscuro, observing light and adding tone – covering tonal range and
application, describing light, using dry mediums and building layers (Approximately 45 minutes)
8. Overview and discussion (Approximately 15 minutes)
Session 2: Mastery of Ink and Wash Painting Techniquesm - Friday 26th of July
1. Class exercise: Ink and wash - Contour and construction drawing from life of organic forms to add ink and wash as tonal medium, adding dry medium in layers to build and enhance tonal contrast (Approximately 80 mins)
2. Discussion about gathering reference documentation from the field (Approximately 10 mins)
3. Refreshment break in outside location on campus (weather permitting) while documenting and sketching site/landscape for reference material for further exploration in the Session 3 (Approximately 60 mins)
4. Class Exercise: Ink and wash on coloured ground – transcribing the miniature to large scale, working in reverse by adding light to mid-ground to enhance depth (Approximately 75 mins)
5. Overview and discussion (Approximately 15 mins)
Session 3: Integrating Color and Mixed Media - Friday 9th of August
1. Class exercise: Introduction to colour, water colour, coloured pencil and gouache – working From photographic and screen references, overlaying and transferring imagery for colour application (Approximately 90 mins)
2. Refreshment break (Approximately 20 mins)
3. Class exercise: Working up a line drawing and site concept from documented photographic and sketched references. Adding colour, watercolour and ink-line, working back into water colour with opaque medium gouache (Approximately 110 mins)
4. Overview and discussion of collected drawings (Approximately 20 mins)
What to expect?
The Arts Lab will provide most of the drawing materials, and DES will provide refreshments for students in each session.
