Easy paths leaving town with immediate views over Derwentwater.
Friar’s Crag viewpoint
One of the finest low-level viewpoints in the Lakes, looking down the full length of the lake.
Eastern shore woodland paths
Quiet, sheltered walking with regular lake openings and views to St Herbert’s Island and Lord’s Island.
Lodore Falls
Dramatic waterfall section — particularly impressive after rain — marking the transition toward Borrowdale.
Borrowdale valley scenery
Big, classic Lakeland views as the valley opens up beneath the surrounding fells.
Western shore approach to Catbells
Calmer lakeside walking past Derwent Bay and Brandelhow with Catbells rising steeply ahead.
Ascent of Catbells
The climb begins gently before becoming steeper and more exciting near the top.
Catbells delivers some of the best reward-for-effort views in the Lake District.

Outstanding panorama: Derwentwater laid out below, Keswick to the north, and the Newlands fells to the west.

Scenic ridge walking followed by a careful descent with constant lake views.
Brandelhow Park & western shore
Relaxed walking through open parkland and woodland, with repeated postcard views back across the water.
Return to Keswick
Gentle lakeside paths back into town — ideal for a café, pub, or swim to finish.
At 12 miles and 1,800 feet of elevation, a good level of fitness is required to complete this hike.
Please bring plenty of layers/waterproofs - this hike will be early March.
Bring enough food/water to sustain you for 20 miles.
This will be the second walk of a Lake District weekend. The previous day (Saturday) will be a 20 mile walk starting and finishing in Pooley Bridge - this will be a circular hike around Ullswater.
I will base myself in Keswick for the Friday and Saturday night. We can arrange group evening meals/drinks nearer the time.
