ABOUT DEREK
Bassoonist Derek Lund was born in Troutdale, Oregon, and began playing at age twelve in his school band. He has studied with esteemed teachers including Steve Vacchi at the University of Oregon, Kristin Wolfe Jensen at the University of Texas at Austin, Carin Miller, and Evan Kuhlmann.
Derek has performed with ensembles including the Newport Symphony Orchestra, Eugene Symphony, Lynn Philharmonia, UO Philharmonia, and the University of Texas Symphony Orchestra and Wind Ensemble. His achievements include winning the Oregon State Solo Contest and recording George Walker’s Piano Concerto for NAXOS with the UO Philharmonia. Derek is an alumus of several summer music festivals, including the Mostly Modern Festival, Eastern Music Festival, and the National Symphony Orchestra’s Summer Music Institute. He has also participated in master classes with renowned artists including Gustavo Núñez, Nancy Goeres, and Benjamin Kamins.
Derek holds a Bachelor of Science in Linguistics with a minor in Arabic Studies from the University of Oregon (cum laude) and is currently pursuing a Master of Music in Performance here at Lynn, in the studio of Whitney Crockett. In his free time, Derek enjoys hiking near water, writing music, and philosophy.
