Dereham Blues Festival has earned a proud reputation for delivering wonderful nights of the very best live music. Years on, we’re still talking about when Paul Jones, Georgie Fame and Andy Fairweather Low played Dereham Memorial Hall! Some of the very best concerts of all featured musicians very few of the audience had even heard of – will there ever be nights to top Hamilton Loomis or Toby Lee?
Introducing Mike Sanchez! Once described as “the finest, most exciting, most entertaining artist in British rhythm and blues”, and “bloody brilliant”, “ part Latin gigolo, part rockabilly hellcat” Sanchez left Britain for Spain and the continental festival circuit years ago His pulsating boogie-woogie piano has taken him round and round the world. Mike’s high energy, theatrical personality, characterised by big hair and flamboyant stage suits earned him the title ‘Bossman of Boogie’, whilst his supreme technique made him three times British Blues Keyboard Player of the Year.
Sanchez fronted The Big Town Playboys, whose line up variously included Andy Fairweather Low and Mick Fleetwood, and the band frequently supported Eric Clapton during his annual Albert Hall stints. Mike spent four years as a full time member of Bill Wyman’s Rhythm Kings. He recalls among his career highlights joining Led Zeppelin’s O2 reunion concert, and lining up alongside Clapton, Knopfler, Albert Lee and Dave Gilmour for a live recording at Abbey Road with Elvis’ original guitarist Scotty Moore to make “Tribute to The King with Scotty Moore and Friends”.
Expect explosive piano, hot vocals and phenomenal support from trumpet, saxophone, stand up bass and drums, in Mike’s classic rock ‘n’ roll, rhythm ‘n’ blues and rockabilly six piece line up.
Over the last 15 years, Mike Sanchez has been a rare summer migrant to UK shores. We’re privileged to welcome him to Dereham Blues Festival as part of his fifteen date tour, and we’re grateful to him for re-arranging his itinerary to play for us en route from The 100 Club in Oxford Street to The Edinburgh Jazz and Blues Festival.
