About this Event
The Derby Climate Forum is a unique (well almost) collaboration between Derby City Council and Derby Climate Coalition. We have open face to face meetings, generally bi-monthly, at the Council House and the next one is on Monday at 6.30 pm, September 30.
This meeting is about the Greenhouse Gas Emissions, and is in two parts.
First Paul Mullee, from the Council will give an update of the latest emission figures for the City, drawing upon recently released Government statistics. The bald facts are alarming. Despite all the endeavours locally in 2022 UK annual emissions fell 5.1% while those in Derby rose +1.1%. Unfortunately, Derby is one of only 15 (4%) of 361 total UK local authorities where emissions have increased. If we take 2005 as the starting point the emissions have dropped by two fifths, but this is largely due to the decarbonisation of the electricity grid and the reduction of manufacturing, plus a greater dependence on imports. Since 2019 Derby emissions have fallen by -0.4%. whereas the UK national emissions have fallen 9.9%. Even then that is not nearly enough. Nationally we need to reduce emissions nationally and locally by about 10% per year to comply with the Paris Agreement and to hit the City 2035 net zero target.
Then we will look at the Greenhouse gas emissions generated by the Council. Andy Hills, also from the Council will be talking about updating the City Council Action Plan, in other words looking at the emissions directly from the council, which is less than 2% of the cityemissions, and looking at ways that the Council can influence other emitters in the city.
