Dept of Rock’s Public Sector Battle of the Bands competition is back!Who will be crowned winner of Dept of Rock 2024?
Who will have the most fun along the way?
Come cheer on our fabulous public servant rockstars as they abandon their laptops and lanyards and have fun ripping it up with guitars, mics and drumsticks (and other cool instruments).
24 bands are lining up in 4 heats on Tuesdays in October 2024 at Smith’s Alternative.
The bands cover a diverse range of musical experience and genres and many have formed for the competition. In each heat, 6 bands will take the stage to play 3 songs to impress the audience and our volunteer judging panel. The judges announce which 3 bands from each heat moves on to the semi-finals at the end of the night.
This is a feel-good and friendly band competition at Canberra’s favourite live music venue Smith’s Alternative. Our aim is to showcase and encourage amateur musos working in government, smash ‘boring public servant’ myths, raise some money for local charities and share the joy of local live music.
Yes it’s a competition but it’s not really about winning or losing – Dept of Rock is about having a go and having a good time.
For those who are about to rock, and do public administration, we salute you!

Tri-Age
A new band made up of 3 generations of musicians of 3 different nationalities from 3 different musical backgrounds, creating our own unique sound on guitar, bass, and drums. Don’t miss out on the holy rock trinity that is Tri-Age!
Timecult
Timecult are time traveling pioneers of the groundbreaking genre of regressive heavy iron. Neolithic time disruptors, ageless and timeless with Earthy overtones and just a hint of walnut. The members of Timecult have travelled through the ages, seen things only the most enlightened have seen and now embark on a holy mission to find only the most worthy and devoted followers to whom they will impart their ageless wisdom and power chords.
Sonic Death Ray
In an effort to try and come up with the perfect piece of music by combining the discographies of the Pixies, Talking Heads, Green Day and Joy Division, the mad scientist accidentally created the horrifying Sonic Death Ray. Get on this spaceship and get your blasters ready for music that will blast your eardrums and get you up on your feet.
The DUDs
Acoustic punk that’s full of attitude, but not hard on the ears, the DUDS are here to tell it like it is. Since coming second in 2023 Dept of Rock, Battle of the Bands, the boys are back to DUD audiences yet again. They have boarded that train of No Decorum and steaming their way through that PC School Bus trapped on the crossing of life. Telling stories of the APS from last century and upsetting the leadership and elected officials as they go. Songs for every frustrated APS employee, let it out with the DUDS.
