About this Event

Visiting from the University of Saskatchewan, Dr. Michelle Gagnon will be presenting "Adolescent Menstrual Pain: Bridging Biopsychosocial Understanding and Care".

Despite being a common and often debilitating concern during adolescence, dysmenorrhea has received relatively little research and clinical attention. Compared to other chronic and recurrent pain conditions, a biopsychosocial understanding of dysmenorrhea and corresponding treatment approaches have lagged behind. In this talk, I will first review how dysmenorrhea presents across the reproductive years, with particular attention to adolescence, and discuss key biopsychosocial considerations relevant to understanding and treating menstrual pain. I will then present recent research examining help-seeking experiences among adolescents, highlighting challenges that have informed the need for better treatment options. Finally, I will present pilot data from our recently co-designed mobile app developed to support the treatment of menstrual pain in youth. Across these studies, I will emphasize persistent gaps in research and care that underscore the need for more accessible, developmentally informed, and biopsychosocial treatment options for adolescent menstrual pain.
