About this Event
This workshop reports findings from the Nuffield Foundation funded project Trajectories of Deprivation in the UK. Taking a focus on Northern Ireland, the event details evidence on deprivation in NI using data from the 2021 Census. The first part of the workshop (Session 1) situates NI within the wider UK and assesses levels of deprivation in NI compared to elsewhere in the UK. In the second part of Session 1, we show how deprivation can be measured at multiple spatial scales and that the choice of scale is important in understanding how spatial inequalities are manifested. In the third part of the workshop (Session 2), research on deprivation trajectories in neighbourhoods across NI is outlined. This session shows how far deprivation persists in local areas and it is argued that such evidence is crucial in designing effective strategies for tackling spatial inequalities. The final part of the workshop (Session 2) will show how the data generated as a part of the project can be used in targeting resources and developing policy aimed at supporting vulnerable communities. The event will be of interest to policymakers, NGOs, and academics concerned with deprivation trends in NI.
Speakers include Prof Chris Lloyd (QUB), Andrew Steenson (Public Health Agency), Gareth Downey (Belfast City Council).
