The Depot will be hosting a free night of poetry Friday, February 27th from 7-8PM. Three poets, Claire Maracle, Tobias Wray, and Zhenya Yevtushenko will speak on the theme “Love As an Act of Resistance”. Light refreshments will be provided.Claire Maracle is a Mohawk member of the Six Nations of the Grand River, raised as a guest on Muscogee, Osage, and Cherokee land. Claire’s work bridges storytelling, liberation, and collective care. They co-founded Poetic Justice, bringing literacy and poetry workshops to carceral settings. Claire currently serves as Executive of Words of the People, an Indigenous Language creative nonprofit. Their poetry has appeared in This Land Press, Emerge Magazine, New Words Press, Frontier Poetry, Wayfarer Magazine and elsewhere.
Tobias Wray’s poetry collection, No Doubt I Will Return a Different Man, won the Lighthouse Poetry Series Competition. His poems have found homes in Poem-a-Day, Poetry Daily, Impossible Archetype, On the Seawall, and The Georgia Review. Poems also appear in Queer Nature: A Poetry Anthology (Autumn House Press), Between Queer Teeth (t’ART London), and Poetry Is Bread (Nirala Press). Most recently, he was awarded a National Endowment of the Arts fellowship in support of new projects, including a manuscript on grief called Daddy Essay. He currently serves as director of the Creative Writing programs at the University of Central Oklahoma.
Zhenya Yevtushenko might be the only poet to have performed at the Library of Congress and Mercury Lounge. He is a food service roustabout, student, performer, event organizer and workshop facilitator. He aspires to become a public school teacher. His work has been published in The Guardian, Right Hand Pointing, failbetter, The Tulsa Review, and nominated by eMerge Magazine for the Pushcart Prize and for Best of the Net. He owes his inspiration to his family and to the love of his life, Olivia.
