When we first encounter Buddhism we hear a lot of different truisms: “Nothing is permanent”, “nothing really exists”, “there is no self”, and so on.
The trouble with these so-called truisms is that they are misleading when they are taken out of context. As a result, many people get the impression that Buddhism is nihilistic, and its ultimate aim is make us feel completely detached from everything around us.
Nothing could be further from the truth. In fact Buddhism is all about engaging, engaging in an intelligent and wholesome way. In this talk, we will explore some basic Buddhist tenets that will shed light on this.
About Rio Helmi:
Rio Helmi has been following Tibetan Buddhism for some 45 years and has had the privilege to serve as a translator for the Ven Dagpo Rinpoche and occasionally for HH the Dalai Lama.
Born in 1954 to an Indonesian diplomat father and a Turkish mother, Rio has been capturing images of Asia and writing since 1978. His work spans magazines, documentaries, and more than 20 large format photographic books. Rio has held solo exhibitions in Bali, Jakarta, Madrid, Miyazaki, Palo Alto, San Francisco, and Sydney.
He has focused on the interaction between indigenous peoples and their environment, traveling extensively across Asia. His photographs have been published in regional and international magazines such as Asiaweek, Geo, Harper’s Bazaar, New York Times, Time, Vanity Fair, and Vogue.
Rio has been based in Bali for over four decades and speaks five languages fluently. He writes in Indonesian and English, and has blogged for the Huffington Post and ubudnowandthen.com. He has moderated sessions at the Ubud Writers and Readers Festival and has published notable works like "Memories of the Sacred" and "Popo Danes – Bali Inspired."
