What is this about?

Transgender individuals are navigating increased visibility while also being subjugated to enhanced scrutiny over their bodies and their autonomy. While many adolescents are coming out earlier and living their authentic lives confidently, many are still struggling to find secure housing, gain and maintain employment, have family support, and maintain safety. Due to societal stigma, lack of resources and/ or transphobia, many clients are struggling with multiple mental health diagnoses, making it challenging for them to navigate and thrive in their lives. Lack of provider training and clinical awareness of gender dysphoria oftentimes contributes to transgender clients being diagnosed and labeled with pathologies they do not have, while undermining and ignoring their gender dysphoria symptoms. This workshop will provide vital education for mental health providers pertaining to navigating the complex biopsychosocial profiles of gender diverse individuals.

Objectives:

Identify mental health outcomes often associated with gender and sexual minority individuals

Understand the importance of providing a complete biopsychsocial assessment when working with gender diverse folks

Describe common diagnoses and rationales often given to gender diverse young adults by mental health providers.

CE Certificates:

Certificates will be awarded at the completion of the 1 hour CE course and a completed CE evaluation form turned into staff.

The course meets the qualifications for 1 hour of continuing education credit for LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs, and/or LEPs as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences.
