Denman Wildlife Area includes an extensive floodplain along Little Butte Creek and the Rogue River. We will discuss a channel restoration that was completed in 2011 and look at how the site has changed.Floodplains and their associated riparian areas are important functional landscapes that protect water quality. This walk will be moderately difficult.
We will walk around 2-3 miles round trip on mostly (but not all) flat native soil trails & gravel roads. There will be mud and uneven ground. Walking sticks recommended. We will have a lunch stop. This will be a natural history walk: we will discuss the functions and threats to floodplains, water quality concerns in Little Butte Creek & the Rogue River, and we will do some basic birding and botanizing. The walk will also include oak woodland habitat and chaparral with views of Upper Table Rock.
