Demystifying the Diaspora

Get acquainted with flavors of the African diaspora
Join local food educator Chef Joy Parham of Urban Country Culinary Concepts to demystify the flavors of the African diaspora. This class will highlight ingredients that have influenced our culinary culture here in America and introduce cooking with palm oil, ancient African grains and spices, and stewing techniques. Chef Joy will draw from her personal story, tracing the ingredients and dishes locally to the East Coast, inspired by the smells, tastes, and experiences of her life.
Participants will discover flavors by learning about the individual dishes and ingredients and by cooking together using them. For the second half of the program, we will open up space for storytelling and conversations about Black Americans’ dietary history and our shared ancestry while we share the meal we prepared.
Please notify us in advance of any food allergies or dietary restrictions by emailing [email protected].
All proceeds from ticket sales go towards supporting the Culinary Literacy's Center programs for youth, neighborhood engagement, and English language learning. Free tickets are available for SNAP eligible families and for anyone who cannot afford the fee right now but would still like to participate. Please email [email protected] for more information.
