About this Event
Visit the Great Lakes Institute for Environmental Research (GLIER) to learn about the work of leading freshwater monitoring and community science organizations: DataStream, Water Rangers and the Great Lakes Observing System (GLOS). This event offers a unique opportunity to hear directly from experts and practitioners who are shaping how water quality data is collected, managed, and shared across the Great Lakes and beyond.
Regular monitoring of freshwater resources is essential for protecting environmental and public health. Across the Great Lakes, organizations and researchers collaborate on large-scale programs that use cutting edge instruments to track changing environmental conditions. From dangerous waves to algae blooms, from the health of fish to shifting water levels, these monitoring efforts go beyond scientific research by protecting human lives and the ecosystem services that we sometimes take for granted. Much of this data is open to the public and accessible, even if people are not always aware of how to make the most of it.
The world of water quality data software is changing quickly: the last ten years have seen a significant transformation towards user-friendly, purpose-built digital interfaces that make data understandable and interpretable to scientists and non-scientists alike. Community science goes one step further and invites members of the public to participate in various stages of the research process.
This event is supported by the Canada Water Agency.
