I see little of more importance to the future of our country and our civilization than the full recognition of the place of the artist.Evanstons Dempster St. Pro Musica presents Fall of Freedom, an urgent call to our communities to unite in defiance of authoritarian forces sweeping the nation. This free event is part of a nationwide initiative to support Freedom of Speech and Expression. Chicago Symphony musicians and featured guest artists perform a chamber music concert that calls attention to the current threats to our democracy. The Fall of Freedom concerts, exhibitions, and other public events are activating a creative resistance that channels the urgency of the moment. Join us in an uplifting concert that details the importance of free creative expressions that celebrate the American tradition of peaceful resistance. The concert will include works by composers, like Paul Hindemith and Dimitri Shostakovich, who faced censorship and threats to their freedom in repressive times in Germany and the Soviet Union during tumultuous years in the 20th century. These were times when the United States represented a safe harbor for artists to escape authoritarian regimes. Their music was, and still is, a free-flowing testament to the power of art when freedom of speech and expression faces dire threats to all citizens. In February of 2025 the President abruptly took over the leadership of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, which had been established as our national home for a wide diversity of artistic expression. He cut funding to the National Endowments of the Arts and the National Endowment for the Humanities. Libraries are being censored, and book are being banned. The freedom of artists, creators and communities is being targeted in a methodical planned assault on their independent status. The arts hold a mirror that reflects who we are as a nation.
