#DemocracyDrinks: The Rule of Law and Resilience Against Hybrid Threats

Join us on 28 November 2024 from 1730-1900 at the Humanity Hub in The Hague for a conversation on the critical role of the rule of law in building resilience against hybrid threats originating in particular from Russia.

The Netherlands Helsinki Committee’s Programme Manager Integrity & Accountability, , will be joined by , staff writer and senior editor at Organised Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP), for an in-depth discussion on how the rule of law is being undermined with the help of malign foreign influence. Lozovsky will also reflect on building resilience, in order for our democracies to be better equipped to counter hybrid threats with the rule of law serving as a foundation for a stable and secure society.

Following the moderated discussion, there will be plenty of time for a Q&A with the audience, as well as networking over some bites and drinks.

Meet the speakers

Ilya Lozovsky is a staff writer and senior editor at Organised Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP). Based in Amsterdam, he writes about the intersection of corruption and democracy; covers Russia, Ukraine, Central Asia, and the Caucasus; edits investigations; and is working on new products in other formats.

Ilya was a key editor on OCCRP’s award-winning Plunder and Patronage and Matraimov Kingdom projects about smuggling and money laundering in Central Asia. He was also integrally involved in the Azerbaijani Laundromat, Troika Laundromat, Paradise Papers, Russian Asset Tracker, and other high-profile investigative series.

Prior to joining OCCRP, Ilya edited and wrote for Foreign Policy magazine’s Democracy Lab channel in Washington. Ilya’s work has appeared in Foreign Policy, the Washington Post, The Atlantic, Haaretz, and other outlets.

What are the Democracy Drinks?

#DemocracyDrinks brings together democracy advocates, thinkers and enthusiasts at our monthly informal networking events. It is a great way of making new contacts and catching up with people you know; for testing ideas and planning actions; for moral support and inspiration. Feel free to invite friends and colleagues that work on or are interested in defending values like democracy, rule of law, human rights… Come along and you will be made welcome!

This event series is a collaboration between the Netherlands Helsinki Committee (NHC) and the Netherlands Institute for Multiparty Democracy (NIMD) and The Hague Humanity Hub.

#DemocracyDrinks were launched in 2018 by Defend Democracy Executive Director Alice Stollmeyer. Over time, #DemocracyDrinks have expanded their reach and have been organized in Aarhus, Berlin, Brussels, Budapest, Copenhagen, Kathmandu, Montreal, The Hague and Washington DC, and soon also in other cities. The events attract a lively mixture of people from NGOs, international institutions, think tanks, national governments and representations, academia, public affairs consultancies, social businesses and other active citizens.
