The Soul Sunday Series hosted by Debra James Tucker continues with DeMeeshia Marshall, who has been captivating audiences with her voice since the age of 5. A classically trained soprano, she earned her Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performane from The Ohio State University in May 2017, where she honed her artistry in classical and operatic music. While pursuing her degree, DeMeeshia began touring with Opera Columbus’s educational outreach program (January–April 2016), starring in the lead role of Cinderella. Her relationship with Opera Columbus continued beyond college, and in April 2019 she was featured as a lead performer in the production Opera Meets Jazz alongside the legendary Byron Stripling and the Columbus Jazz Orchestra.
Though classically trained, DeMeeshia is a versatile artist with a dynamic range that spans genres including jazz, gospel, musical theatre, R&B, neo-soul, and more. Her powerful voice and heartfelt delivery have earned her television performances on networks such as The Word Network in Detroit, Michigan, and opened doors to collaborate as a background vocalist for various renowned artists.
In 2016, DeMeeshia was crowned “The Voice of Columbus,” a title broadcast on NBC 4 News, and performed live at the historic Southern Theatre alongside the 200-voice Harmony Project choir and full orchestra.
DeMeeshia has brought her talent to weddings, corporate events, private celebrations, and more—and offers the services of an all-female band featuring vocalists and musicians.
Driven by passion, purpose, and a deep love for her craft, DeMeeshia performs with confidence, energy, and emotional depth. Her mission is to move audiences through music—translating feeling into sound and creating memorable, soul-stirring moments. With faith at her core and a limitless mindset, she continues to expand her artistry, always striving to honor the gift that God has graciously given her.
The unique sound of vocalist Debra James Tucker is a product of extensive training in jazz, classical and gospel music. Her new album is “Voices”, which continues her exploration of early black church forms in contemporary contexts. She is the writer/performer of the one woman show Survival of the Boulevard Singer-winner of an Ohio Arts Council Award for Individual Excellence, has been a visiting instructor at Denison University in the history of African American Gospel Music, and an artist in residence with several youth arts organizations.
